Instructions
Step 1
Kilt measurement is an important step towards kilt-making. Without proper measurement, you cannot make an accurate kilt according to the kilt wearer’s body size. The main important measurement in this regard is waist measurement because without an accurate waist your new kilt cannot fit properly. For accurate waist measurement, you must stand straight, breathe normally and always take help from your friend or someone. Another person should wrap the measurement tape around your waist to get your kilt waist size and this waist size is always different from other bottom wears.
After kilt waist measurement, the next measurement is of buttocks but this is compulsory for those people who have bigger buttocks. If your waist and hip size are almost the same then there is no need to measure the hip but there is more difference than it is necessary for you.
The next measurement is the length of the kilt which varies from person to person but the standard length is 24 inches. In this measurement, the measuring tape should be measured vertically by placing one end at the belly button and the other at the knee cap. The rules are the same for this measurement as waist i.e, stand erect and breathe normally.
Step 2
Choose any cotton fabric color for making the kilt. If you are cutting the fabric for the length then add extra 4 inches and hem them.
Step 3
After hemstitching the length, you have to do the same for the front apron and the backside. You must cut extra 2 inches for the front apron and backside of the kilt and hem them. You must use the same thread for stitching every part of the utility kilt.
Step 4
Now we are going to make the pleats. The dept of the pleat must be 2-3 inches deep. It is up to you how many pleats you can do on the backside. The minimum pleat must be 24.
Step 5
You must stitch the edges of the pleat with your standard stitching machine and after making pleats, you must Iron these pleats.
Step 6
The waistband is very important for every utility kilt and the edges of the waistband must be stitched with the same thread. The size of the waistband is your waist size+1-2inches.
Step 7
After properly attaching the waistband to the Scottish utility kilt, you must cut 7-8 belt loops 2 inches long and 1 inch wide.
Step 8
Cut the pockets for the utility kilt and attached 2 or more buttons and studs to make these pockets attractive.
Step 9
Same fabric cotton straps with metal adjustable buckles for fitting, you can easily tight or lose your kilt according to your body size.
