Nowadays, 4 to 8 yards of fabric is enough for making the standard quality Scottish great kilt. The yard depends on the waist of the person, so if someone has 34 inches waist then 4 yards is enough. While if someone has 44 inches waist then that wearer should go for 6 yards of fabric. However, for over 44 inches waist, the 8-yard tartan fabric is required.

How To Make A Scottish Great Kilt

Making a Scottish great kilt is very easy but just needs some practice. After choosing the fabric, the fabric must lay down on the floor. The center of the fabric must be pleated manually which takes only hardly 10 minutes. Now you put the leather belt on the pleated area of the fabric and lay down on it. The left side of the non-pleated side should move over the right side of the body. Step 1- Pleating Great Kilt

1. You must choose the fabric first before starting pleating
2. Now lay down the woolen fabric on the ground

5. The left and the right tartan fabric should be left unpleated.

Step 2- Wrapping Great Kilt

1. After doing manual pleating, you must put the belt on the pleated side of the fabric.
2. Now you also lay down on the belt.
3. The left side of the non-pleated fabric should move over the right side of your body while the right side of the non-pleated fabric should move over the left side of the body
4. Now the leather belt becomes visible, you must fasten the front apron with your belt.

Part 3- Wearing the Great Kilt

1. After fastening the belt, stand up
2. Now you can see the excess fabric at the backside of your body.
3. One side of the excess fabric should drop over the right shoulder while the other end should move from the left side to the right shoulder.
4. You can use a brooch or pin for fastening both ends of the fabric.
